Knowing what to bring to inpatient rehab can make the decision to start feel a little easier. At Niagara Recovery, our intake team walks each person through the admissions process before arrival, but having a clear idea of what to pack can make the first day feel more manageable. A supportive rehab center in Newfane should help remove as much uncertainty as possible before treatment begins.

This guide explains what to bring, what to leave at home, and what we provide during your stay. It is meant for people entering our medically supervised inpatient detox and 28-day inpatient rehabilitation program. Packing ahead of time can help you arrive with fewer distractions and more focus on getting settled into treatment.

What Documents and Identification to Bring

Bring a government-issued photo ID and your insurance card. If you are on Medicaid or a commercial insurance plan, having your member ID number available speeds up the verification process. Our intake team handles insurance verification before you arrive, so if you have already called us, most of this will be done.

Also, bring a written list of your current medications and their dosages. This is one of the most important things you can do on intake day. Our clinical staff reviews your medications during the physical examination on arrival to ensure your treatment protocol is safe and accurate from day one.

What Clothing and Personal Items to Pack

Pack comfortable clothing for the duration of your stay. For a 28-day residential program, plan for enough clothing to last at least a week, keeping in mind that laundry facilities are available. Focus on casual, loose-fitting clothing. You will not need formal attire.

Personal toiletries are permitted within limits. Bring your toothbrush, toothpaste, unscented deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and any basic hygiene items you use daily. Products containing alcohol, such as certain mouthwashes or hand sanitizers, are typically restricted. Our intake team will provide a complete list of permitted items when you schedule your admission.

What to Leave at Home

Leave valuables at home. Jewelry, expensive electronics, and large amounts of cash create unnecessary risk during a residential stay. A small amount of cash may be permitted for specific personal purchases, so confirm the amount with our intake team when you call.

Do not bring alcohol, non-prescribed medications, or any substances. These are not permitted and will be identified during intake screening. Bringing prohibited items delays the admission process and can affect your placement.

What Niagara Recovery Provides

Our facility provides bedding, towels, and basic necessities for your stay. You do not need to bring your own linens. Meals are provided, and the facility includes recreational spaces, a gym, and areas for group and individual therapy.

For those entering co-occurring disorder treatment alongside addiction treatment, clinical materials and programming are all provided on-site. You do not need to source workbooks, therapy materials, or other clinical resources.

What to Expect When You Arrive

On arrival, you will go through a full physical examination and clinical assessment. Our nursing team, led by Kathleen, our Director of Nursing, reviews your medical history, current medications, and substance use history. This assessment shapes your individualized treatment plan.

The first 24 to 72 hours are often the hardest physically, particularly for those entering detox. Our medical and nursing staff are on-site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You will not be left to manage withdrawal symptoms alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring my phone or laptop to inpatient rehab? Personal electronic devices are restricted during inpatient treatment at most facilities, including ours. The goal of a residential program is to remove distractions and triggers so you can focus fully on treatment. Confirm our current device policy with the intake team when you schedule admission.

What if I take prescription medications daily? Bring all prescription medications in their original bottles along with a written list of dosages. Our clinical team reviews all medications during the intake assessment and manages your prescriptions throughout your stay. Do not stop taking prescribed medications before arrival without consulting a physician.

Is there a dress code during treatment? There is no formal dress code. Comfortable, casual clothing is appropriate. Clothing with drug or alcohol references may be restricted. The intake team will clarify any specific clothing guidelines when you schedule your admission.

What if I forget something important? Family members may be able to drop off approved items after your admission. Contact our team at (716) 265-3700 to confirm what can be brought in after arrival and how to arrange it.

Do I need to bring food or snacks? Meals are provided throughout your stay. Outside food brought into the facility may be subject to restrictions. If you have dietary needs or allergies, let the intake team know before you arrive so we can prepare accordingly.
